Chapter 5

The Big Red Barn

Valen looked up into the clear night sky and took a deep breath. He pulled the hood of his cloak over his head and tied the fasteners together. The one light on his cobblestone street flickered on and off, on and off. With his trusty club hanging from his belt, he marched up the winding street. Sia slithered around his neck and kept her head resting on his shoulder. Little Henry poked his head out of his breast pocket and Jay buzzed about angrily, darting here and there.

Valen made his way north, towards the east–west road. As he got closer, he increased his stride, making it harder for people to speak to him. He entered the east–west road and turned towards the town square. With his head held high, he stayed in the middle of the road so nobody could mistake him for someone else.

‘Where are you going, outsider?’ a man said from his shop door.

Valen passed him before the question ended. He continued striding towards the town square. Halfway up the road, two guards walking in the opposite direction stopped and glared at him. Sia raised her head off Valen’s shoulder and hissed. With wide eyes, the guards pulled their swords. Valen raised a surprised eyebrow at the guards’ bravery. With a roar, he ran at them, sending his cloak flapping in the wind. Jay darted ahead of Valen and buzzed angrily around the guards’ heads.

‘Stop,’ a guard said, holding out his hand.

Before the second guard could say anything, Valen ploughed into both of them, sending them flying across the street. One guard lay still, with a trickle of blood dripping from his head. The other raised his hand to his mouth and whistled.

‘That’s going to waken everyone, Jay,’ Valen said, as he jogged towards the square. ‘Are you three ready for some fun?’

Jay buzzed, Henry clacked and Sia hissed.

Two more guards jumped out of the alleys. Valen pounded one to the ground while Jay stung the other.

He walked across the square and made for the back of the town hall, where a wide stone staircase led down into the ground. Double-stepping down the steps, Valen stopped just short of the massive wrought-iron gate. Two guards sat on either side. Without waiting for the guards to say something, Valen swung his club and knocked one of them unconscious. He picked up the second guard and slammed him against the gate.

‘Open this gate or I will make sure the same thing happens to the two of you,’ he said, eyeing the two guards on the inside.

One guard shied away, but the second guard stood firm. ‘Pray tell, how are you going to open the gate?’ the guard said. ‘I am the only one with the keys.’

A smile stretched across Valen’s face. ‘Thank you kindly for the information, sir.’

The guard gave Valen a confused look.

‘Off you go, you three,’ Valen said.

Jay flew at the guard and stung him on the cheek. Sia wrapped around the guard’s feet. He let out a scream as he collapsed to the ground.
